#Review: The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo - Amy Schumer

Review:

*Note: This book was provided to me by HarperCollins India for an UNBIASED review. The views expressed below are solely my own.

The Girl with the Lower Back tattoo is the [AMAZING] writing debut of [also AMAZING] Amy Schumer. This book is about and by my most favorite person in the entire planet and it turned to be awesome. It is a collection of well-written essays narrated with unfaltering honesty and humor coming from a person who, in her own words, is a "brave-ass chick". This book takes us through the life of Amy and how she perceived it as a person.

The essays in the book range from 'An Open Letter to Vagina', 'Times It's Okay for a Man to Not Make a Woman Come During Sex' and 'Rider for the Funeral of Amy Schumer'. Amy tells her about her experiences as a child with divorced parents, her relationship with her parents, friends and boyfriend(s!), a stand-up comedian, actress, waitress, pedicab driver, one-night stand and a lot more. This book has a collection of her private photographs that allow the reader to experience what she experienced. As I also used the audiobook, I could feel the emotions that Amy was feeling, perfectly.

Just through the course of about 320 pages, Amy is successful in her attempt to make the reader laugh until they need to wipe tears off, ugly-cry and feel a lot of other emotions... She also manages to talk about a lot of delicate issues with absolute ease and perfection, like Gun-Violence and Domestic Abuse. As a person who has been following Amy for a really significant time, I expected a LOT from this book and she was not only able to reach that level of expectation, but also surpass it flawlessly. This book also contains some hilarious lists of things like what we don't know about her, what makes her insanely furious and what makes her happy. Basically, this is a guide to know an amazing person that is Amy Schumer.

CONCLUSION: Amy's wit, sarcasm and her perception of the universe is unique and without a doubt - notable. This makes the book a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED title for anyone who is comfortable reading about Amy's vagina. Just kidding. There is a reason why this book has been on the New York Times Bestseller List for the time it has.

#Review - A Torch Against the Night - Sabaa Tahir

Rating:

4/5 Book Emojis

This review is a proud part of Penguin Random House's A Torch Against the Night Global Book Tour.

Format:

*Note: I was sent a review copy of the book from Penguin Random House (thanks!) for an UNBIASED review. The views expressed here are solely my own.

This book is the sequel to the New York Times Bestseller An Ember in the Ashes. It continues exactly where the first installment of the series left off and is narrated by the three main characters - Laia (the slave girl), Elias (the Aspirant Martial) and Helene (an Aspirant Martial and Elias' former friend). It goes through Laia and Elias' journey as they flee the city of Serra to free Laia's brother Darin who was captured by the Martials, for being accused of being a spy, in a raid at their home.

What's different about this book is that it is narrated in a way that it goes in a flow through the chapters, unlike An Ember in the Ashes, in which some chapters are just the same incident being narrated by either Laia or Elais to show the reader their perspectives. The pace of the story fluctuates like a rollercoaster ride that every reader will enjoy. The beginning of the book is already intense and the pace slows down through the first half. This, however falters the interest of the book for a significant while, unlike AEITA. In the second half, fortunately, the book gets insanely fast-paced and the story unfolds itself through twists and turns that left my jaw hanging loose from my face.

The crispness of the book stays intact till the very end but is fiercer than its predecessor. What I liked most about this book was how the chapters ended in a way that would make sure of the reader to read further into the book... The characters remain strongly rooted in this installment to the series too... Their essence is strong enough to keep the reader craving to intently read what they narrate to them.

CONCLUSION: From what I believe, you should get both the copies of this series yet written and released. Trust me, it's worth it.

Blog Tours are fun, especially when they're international and the books are written by @sabaatahir and published by the lovelies at @penguinrandomhouse / @riverheadbooks πŸŒˆπŸ’–πŸŒˆπŸ’–πŸŒˆπŸŒˆπŸ’–πŸŒˆπŸ’–πŸŒˆπŸ’–πŸŒˆπŸ’–πŸŒˆπŸ’–πŸŒˆπŸŒˆπŸ’–πŸŒˆπŸ’–πŸŒˆπŸ’–πŸŒˆ Currently reading 'An Ember in the Ashes' by Sabaa Tahir 😊 P.S. "Life is made of many moments that mean nothing. Then one day, a single moment comes along to define every second that comes after" - @sabaatahir 🌈 #CurrentlyReading this beauty by the extremely talented @sabaatahir πŸ’– Blurb: Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free. Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear. It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire's impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They've seen what happens to those who do. But when Laia's brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire's greatest military academy. There, Laia meets Elias, the school's finest soldier-and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he's being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined-and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself. ................................................ P.S. I want my readers to know that Book-Hangovers are not a common thing for me. Whenever I get them, they last for at least a week and it shows that the book I read was phenomenal. An Ember in the Ashes is such a case, too.

This book is about a girl named Laia - who is a Scholar and a soldier named Elias - who is a Martial. It deals with their story of bravery, in a world ruled by the Martial Empire, narrated by them in alternate chapters. The book begins with Laia narrating how by a raid at their house by the Martials, her life takes a turn as her brother is arrested for treason and her only remaining family - her Nan and Pop are killed- with her her house being burnt to the very ground.

Through a series of events, Laia turns to the Resistance, i.e. the rebels, for freeing her brother, in exchange for risking her life to spy from within the Empire's greatest military academy, as a slave, where she is assigned to serve the tyrant and cruel Commandant.

These LOVELY magnetic bookmarks from
Spot Drop bookmarks make reading cuter!
The book is an aim of the author at combining various genres like YA, Adventure, Mystery, Thrill, Romance, Paranormal, Fantasy etc. In doing so, I felt that Sabaa has not only succeeded, but also set an example for any author who wishes to write any fictional book. The way the book is written is highly commendable since the writing style is crisp and keeps the reader hooked. However, I feel that the first half is slightly elaborate than the second half, which is when the book takes on a very fast pace. This flaw is shadowed by Sabaa's brilliant writing that is absolutely on point.
Sabaa makes the reader feel all of these emotions at once that one wouldn't have known to exist. The book surprisingly has a love triangle (or rather a square!) that left me screaming to take sides. It also deals with a lot of violence through the slavery and the Martials.

"...you are an Ember in the Ashes"
This is written in three parts and a total of fifty chapter that are alternatively narrated by Laia and Elias. Within it, are such well-written characters, some human and some not, that are perfectly rooted into the soul of this book. These characters range from wide age groups and are the oil to keep the book's fire going (see what I did there?!). Everything about is book stands out and unique, making all of the other books of the same genre seem like sheer attempts at writing. Such stories are perhaps told by Oracles from books that illuminate words written in flame...

CONCLUSION: This book is has some kind of feel to it that makes you want to read it on a Christmas Eve in front of your fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate by your side. So, don't wait for anything and just buy NOW! Reading it was more like an honor than an experience.

My Last Love Story - Falguni Kothari - Blog Tour

About the Book:
Perfect for fans of Jojo Moyes’s, Me Before You, My Last Love Story is a heartbreakingly romantic tale about the complexities of trauma and whether love can right a wrong.

I, Simeen Desai, am tired of making lemonade with the lemons life has handed me.

Love is meant to heal wounds.
Love was meant to make my world sparkle and spin.
Love has ripped my life apart and shattered my soul.

I love my husband, and he loves me.
But Nirvaan is dying.
I love my husband. I want to make him happy.
But he is asking for the impossible.

I don’t want a baby.
I don’t want to make nice with Zayaan.
I don’t want another chance at another love story.

Book Links:

Conversation with Zayaan Khan from My Last Love Story.

Introduce yourself to our readers.

Hey! I’m Zayaan Khan—Zai to my friends. I have two younger sisters and a mother, and we live in London. I’ve come to Carmel-by-the-Sea to be with Nirvaan and also to finish my dissertation in Islamic studies.

You’re a nerd, huh. Then, this question is perfect for you: If you could do something dangerous just once with no risk, what would you do?

Zai: Nirvaan and I have pretty much covered all the risky and dangerous things men can do. As of this moment, I’d try any risky experimental medical procedure on Nirvaan to rid his head of tumors once and for all.

What’s the biggest lie you told in childhood?

Zai: That I love my brother. That he was redeemable in Allah’s eyes.

Which of your ancestors would you most like to meet?

Zai: My eight-times great grandfather who was a Sufi saint. I’d love to meet him and discuss philosophy.

Is it more essential to develop beliefs or gain knowledge?

Zai: Gain knowledge, of course. Belief without knowledge is a waste and an error. Knowledge is reason. Belief can be unreasonable.

Heavy. Let’s end on a fun note, shall we? What’s the most fun party you ever attended?

Zai: My—our—fifteenth birthday party. It was at Dandi Beach back home in Gujarat. It’s where we—Nirvaan and I—met Simi.

And that’s our five questions done. Thanks for being a sport. And I wish you find that experimental procedure for Nirvaan too.

Advance Praise:

At once heartbreaking, delightful and completely unexpected. A must read!

The Last of the Firedrakes - Farah Oomerbhoy

Rating:  +

*Note: A copy of this book was provided to me for an UNBIASED review and the views expressed below are solely mine.

Princess Diaries meets Harry Potter in this AMAZING TRILOGY!

My copies of the book
This MAGNUM OPUS is about a common (but not-so-common) 16 YO girl, Aurora Darlington, who lives with the horrible Darlingtons after her birth parents had "abandoned" her and her adoptive parents died in a car accident. Her life seemed sadly lonely and brutal until she discovers that she was from a whole another world called Avalonia, where she reaches after being kidnapped and dragged through a magical portal. This is where she gets to know about her past and her reality.

The book is *sighs* pure brilliance in around 416 pages filled with magic, both: character-wise and writing-wise. The book has been written so divinely that it adds to the spectacular-ity of this book... Much to any reader's surprise: this is Farah's debut book! This book is undoubtedly what was missing in the legacy of Indian writers and especially in the case of Fantasy writing.

Every character, fortunately, enhances the story and curbs the possibility of the readers to put the book down for a while and resume reading in different sittings. The only way to describe the greatness of this book is to say that it surely is the aid for someone suffering from a Harry Potter hangover and anyone who CAN read a book. Not to forget - I read the book in two sittings because of the unfortunate thing called sleep. I started reading this book in the evening and read it until 4 am until I inevitably fell asleep after which I continued reading it as soon as I woke up. Anyways, I have a fantasy hangover from this book right now. Even for a person who has never read Fantasy before, this book is the PERFECT beginning. Well, for anyone perhaps.

The author surely deserves much more recognition and worldwide fandom for this book more in addition to the great success it has achieved since its global release. I obviously am congratulating the author right now on proving, to readers  and publishers worldwide, the potential within debut writers and the stories they want to share. Last of the Firedrakes is truly the epitome of brilliant writing and is the book the world was missing after the end of the Harry Potter series.

I REALLY REALLY (infinity times) that this book is made into a movie, ASAP, by any of the TOP Bollywood production houses...

CONCLUSION: As I said earlier, if you know how to read, please get this book and read it. This will definitely keep your mind occupied for days, after finishing it.

More Happy Than Not - Adam Silvera - Book Review

Rating:
 + lots of tears...

Note: I received this book from Penguin Random House for an UNBIASED review. Receiving this book doesn't change my true opinion of the book whatsoever.

"Memories: some can be sucker punching, others carry you forward; some stay with you forever, others you forget on your own. You can’t really know which ones you’ll survive if you don’t stay on the battlefield, bad times shooting at you like bullets. But if you’re lucky, you’ll have plenty of good times to shield you."
My copies of the book
This book/masterpiece is about a boy named Aaron Soto who lives in Bronx, in a one-room apartment where his father killed himself in the bathtub. Aaron finds it tough to live further with the bad stuff going on in his life so he attempts suicide too. But fortunately, he survives and continues to recover with the help of his patient girlfriend Genevieve.

Then, there is a new boy in the story - Thomas. He's sweet and doesn't mind talking about Aaron's past, on his rooftop where he sets up his projector to watch movies. On the basis of the three weeks Aaron spends with Thomas ,when his Genevieve goes for an art camp, he's confirmed that he has fallen for Thomas in a way he feels is not right.
This when Aaron decides to turn to Leteo Institute's memory-alteration procedure to turn-off these new-found feelings and forget that he's gay.

This is the [UNBELIEVABLE] DEBUT of Adam Silvera written extremely flawlessly while looking effortless. The characters are very powerful and have been written in a way that add to the perfection of this book. Aaron narrates the story such that any one who starts reading would be easily sucked in until the end where you just want to put down the book in front of you, kneel in front of it and clap while wiping off the tears it leaves you with. There is not even a single place in the book where you can say - this part could've been written better - which makes me give it all-aces.

I'm so glad that the author cared enough to write this story and share it with us. Truly. It made me cry more than what I cried after watching 'The Notebook'. What embroiders the perfection of this book is its format - the way it has been written in parts and the smileys... When I received this book I really praised the reviews and appreciation it received as a debut. Now, that I have finished it, I am one of the people in the crowd. Whenever I'll look at this book in my library, I'll be forced to look at it with my nostalgia of Aaron and his life, with teary-eyed smile.

CONCLUSION: Indeed, it is the perfection of a book about a boy and his tale of realization and heartbreak, which needs to be read by every single person in the world as a necessity. Okay?

Upcoming Event Info - Live Twitter Chat with Shawna Yang Ryan, author of Green Island

Hello there, readers!

I want to inform you all about an upcoming live chat session with Shawna Yang Ryan: it will take place on Twitter and it is open for everyone ALL AROUND THE WORLD! This will take place on Sunday, 28th February 2016 (GMT: 9 AM). So, set a reminder in your phones NOW!!!

Blurb:

A stunning story of love, betrayal, and family, set against the backdrop of a changing Taiwan over the course of the twentieth century.

February 28, 1947: Trapped inside the family home amid an uprising that has rocked Taipei, Dr. Tsai delivers his youngest daughter, the unnamed narrator of Green Island, just after midnight as the city is plunged into martial law. In the following weeks, as the Chinese Nationalists act to crush the opposition, Dr. Tsai becomes one of the many thousands of people dragged away from their families and thrown into prison. His return, after more than a decade, is marked by alienation from his loved ones and paranoia among his community—conflicts that loom over the growing bond he forms with his youngest daughter. Years later, this troubled past follows her to the United States, where, as a mother and a wife, she too is forced to decide between what is right and what might save her family—the same choice she witnessed her father make many years before.

As the novel sweeps across six decades and two continents, the life of the narrator shadows the course of Taiwan’s history from the end of Japanese colonial rule to the decades under martial law and, finally, to Taiwan’s transformation into a democracy. But, above all, Green Island is a lush and lyrical story of a family and a nation grappling with the nuances of complicity and survival, raising the question: how far would you be willing to go for the ones you love?

Tweenache in the Time of Hashtags - Judy Balan

Rating: 5/5 Book Emojis!

Note: I received this book from the author for an UNBIASED review. Receiving this book doesn't change my true opinion of the book whatsoever.

This is the second book in the 'Nina the Philosopher' series (however can be read as a Stand-Alone) and is MUCH better than the first one even though I rated it 5 Stars. This may be the result of Nina growing up... Anyways, This book is actually Nina's blog where she narrates whatever happens in her life while venting out her emotions. This all is written through a 12 YO's (very plausibly/incredibly) mind. This book takes the reader through the amazing 12th year in Nina's life, dictated by her.

The plot is very intriguing and captivates the reader till the very end. The highlights of this year were: 1. A new NERD in the class - Anna 2. Nina gets her first period (Don't worry, the story does NOT revolve around this topic) 3. She has her FIRST CRUSH (Lalalalalala/Hilariously written) 4. Her Dad finally is introduced in the series (Nina's mom is a single parent).  All the characters of this book were entertaining and had their own importance.

What I really like about this book is that it is written by Judy Balan. She is AN AMAZING writer and the way presents the emotions of a 12 YO is commendable and also very relate-able. I mean, we all have been through this age and it is not only strange but is fascinating too. Especially, what a creative, yet ordinary 12 YO girl sees in the world is  interesting through this story.

Coming to the 2 special features of this series - The Quotes and The Format : this book has been written in such a way that while being humorous and enticing, this book is very very virtuous to its sense. This is only because Nina has been brought up in that way and this is what makes the book a compulsion for any young reader and a parent who wants their kid to read quality and entertaining books. The story is very gripping (is NOT AT ALL dragged anywhere), which can be proved by its page length - It promises 200 pages of a Fun-Packed Read!

CONCLUSION: Just go ahead and buy it. If you are a teenager who wants to read something - READ IT! If you are a parent and want your kid to read something - BUY IT! If you have someone above the age of 12 and you want to gift something to him/her - GIFT IT! If YOU ARE above 12 years of age - READ IT! I want you to read it - no matter what and NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

Blog Tour - Last Vacation ~ Sarah Elle Emm

About the Book:
Seven days have passed since Naples real estate agent Megan MacKenna has heard from her twin sister, Madeline, who was vacationing on the beautiful, Caribbean island of St. Croix. Though authorities are not convinced there is a case to solve, Megan knows with all of her heart something happened to Maddy. When Megan receives a direct warning to leave the island or end up like her sister, she turns to the only person who has taken her seriously since she arrived, Gabe, a breakfast cook at a local diner.

Undercover DEA agent, Gabriel Walker has been building his cover for months, waiting for the opportunity to work his way into the infamous Torrez crime ring. When Megan shows up asking questions and Gabe realizes her twin’s disappearance might be linked to the Torrez men, he has to convince her to go back to Florida before she becomes their next victim.

The closer Megan gets to the truth, the more Gabe begins to suspect he is missing a huge piece of the puzzle. And someone is closing in on Megan…

Fun Fact:

I grew up visiting the island of St. Croix with my family. As an adult, I lived in the U.S. Virgin Islands, on both St. Croix and St. Thomas. I always wanted to write a fiction story that took place there, but I never took the time to write it until recently.

Excerpt:

Megan peered out at the vast expanse of ocean gleaming in the bright morning sunshine before her. The turquoise waters seemed to go on forever. From the Caribbean Airways in flight map, she had noted theislands of Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, and St. John were in the far off distance. She had been told a faint view of the densely populated St. Thomas could sometimes be seen on a perfectly clear day, but no matter how she strained her eyes, she couldn’t quite see it today.

Had Maddy hopped on a sailboat and continued her travels to another island as the police officer had suggested? It wasn’t like Maddy not to check in. Her cell phone had been going straight to voice mail since the last photo Maddy had sent, and according to the cell company, the cell phone was out of service range. Something had happened to her sibling. The last communication with Maddy had been an unexplained picture of an iguana. No message, no text, nothing. Just an enormous, slimy, dragon-resembling lizard. Megan sunk her head to her chest. Where in the world was her sister?

“Everything okay, Miss?”

Startled from her hopeless thoughts, Megan sat upright at the sound of the low voice. Her eyes scanned the length of the man standing before her, and she pursed her lips together. She guessed he was probably about six-foot-two.

As she sat silently, observing him, the man repeated his question, “Are you okay?” His tone bordered on cautious, but concerned.

“Everything’s fine,” she finally managed with a tight voice.

With a smile, his concern faded away, and he reached behind his back to untie a grease-spotted apron. He folded the apron up, pulled out a chair at the table right next to Megan’s, about a foot and a half from her, and sat down.

An internal alarm went off, making Megan feel extremely uncomfortable with his proximity, and she fidgeted with her hands as he stared at her, finally forcing them into her lap. How could a voice so soothing go with a gruff-looking character like him? And what in the world was he doing sitting down so close to her?
